Courtney Barnes, a partner at Feldman Legal Advisors, advocate for psychedelic policy reform and upcoming guest at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference positioned herself at the front lines of the legal landscape for cannabis and psychedelics, steering the conversation around regulation and compliance in industries marked by rapid change and complex challenges.

With a background rooted in the narrative of the War on Drugs, Barnes’s journey into the realm of cannabis and psychedelics law was almost predestined, given her upbringing in a family with direct involvement in drug enforcement.

A Personal Mission Turned Professional

Barnes’s venture into this specialized field of law was inspired by a combination of personal history and an intrinsic call to aid in the healing process of others.

“My journey into cannabis and psychedelics started in the womb,” Barnes recalled, highlighting the influence of her father’s role as a DEA agent on her career path. This unique perspective has fueled her passion for navigating the intricacies of an industry that balances the edge of legal frameworks and societal acceptance.

The Challenge Of Legislation

Drafting legislation for cannabis and psychedelics presents a unique set of challenges, from reconciling the sacred nature of these substances with their controversial legal status to addressing the societal fears surrounding their use.

“The most challenging aspect of drafting cannabis (or psychedelics) legislation is balancing the unique dualities of natural medicines,” Barnes stated, underscoring the delicate act of creating policies that accommodate both decriminalization and regulated commercial access.

Vision For The Future

Looking ahead, Barnes envisioned a legislative landscape that respects the decriminalization and indigenous and religious uses of psychedelics, drawing on examples like Denver’s I-300 measure and the efforts in California. She advocated for a balanced approach that integrates these substances into society safely, is regulated and their potential for healing acknowledged.

“I do not propose to have the perfect answer myself, but I do hope to continue to see policy that balances decriminalization with commercialization be the new normal,” she said.

Advocacy Through Education And Healing

Beyond her legal practice, Barnes’s commitment extends to supporting veterans and others affected by PTSD through the Heroic Hearts Project and Healing Our Heroes Foundation. These roles complement her legal work, providing a practical outlet for her advocacy efforts. Through these organizations, Barnes can contribute to policy reform and directly impact the lives of individuals grappling with the aftermath of trauma.

Barnes represents a new generation of legal practitioners who navigate the complexities of emerging industries and seek to reform them from within. Her work epitomizes the fusion of personal conviction with professional expertise, aiming to reshape the future of cannabis and psychedelics in a way that benefits society at large.
