- Research shows CBD as effective alternative to opioids for dental pain.
- CBD's advantages over traditional analgesics offer a safer option for pain management and a catalyst for change in the medical community.
Research published in the Journal of Dental Research has shown CBD’s potential as a safe and effective alternative to opioids for acute dental pain, marking a significant advancement in pain management and opioid alternative research.
The study, conducted by scientists from Rutgers University and the University of Texas, pointed to a promising new direction in addressing the opioid epidemic through cannabis-based solutions.
The Study’s Findings
In this study, adults with moderate to severe dental pain were given Epidiolex, an FDA-approved CBD medication, to evaluate its effectiveness in pain management compared to a placebo. The findings revealed that those treated with CBD experienced a marked decrease in pain levels.
Interestingly, participants who received a higher dosage of CBD reported a faster onset of pain relief. This research highlights the potential of CBD as a viable alternative to opioid medications for the treatment of acute dental pain, offering a promising option for those seeking safer analgesic solutions.
CBD’s Advantages Over Traditional Analgesics
The study’s encouraging results highlighted CBD’s comparable efficacy to traditional analgesics used in dental emergencies. Not only did CBD treatment alleviate pain, but it also improved bite force among subjects, an essential aspect of dental health and overall quality of life.
The minimal number needed to treat (NNT) for achieving at least 50% pain relief further underscored CBD’s effectiveness, positioning it as a viable alternative to standard opioid mixtures.
However, researchers acknowledged some side effects related to CBD use, such as sedation, diarrhea and abdominal pain, emphasizing the need for further research to solidify CBD’s safety profile in pain management.
A Catalyst For Change In Pain Management
Dr. Chanda Macias, CEO of National Holistic Healthcare, a renowned figure in the cannabis industry, and an upcoming speaker at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference, has previously recognized the efficacy of CBD for pain relief and inflammation in oral care diseases. Her work, along with this recent study, shows the growing acceptance and interest in cannabis-based treatments within the medical community.
“Like all medications, finding the ideal one for each patient and their symptoms involves an element of trial and error,” Dr. Macias told Benzinga. “Some conditions, for example, have been shown to be responsive to higher amounts of CBD and less THC, so that’s where formulations matter. Second, the condition of the patient is an important consideration in determining the best delivery methods.”
As the cannabis industry continues to evolve, this study represents a critical step forward in integrating CBD into mainstream medical practices for pain management. With future FDA approval anticipated for Epidiolex or similar CBD solutions in dental pain management, patients may soon have access to more effective and safer alternatives to opioids for treating acute toothache and potentially other pain conditions.
The Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference is returning to Florida in a new venue in Hollywood on April 16 and 17, 2024. The two-day event at The Diplomat Beach Resort will be a chance for entrepreneurs, both large and small, to network, learn, and grow.
