Massachusetts‘ cannabis industry saw unprecedented growth in 2023, with total sales nearing $1.8 billion, a significant milestone highlighting the industry’s robust expansion in the state. December alone brought in $158.7 million in marijuana sales, with adult-use cannabis contributing the lion’s share at approximately $1.57 billion, or 87% of the annual total.

Medical marijuana sales also substantially increased, adding around $226 million to the year’s figures. The peak of adult-use sales in December reached $140 million, complemented by $18.6 million from medical sales, Marijuana Moment reports.

Addressing The THC-Infused Hemp Product Conundrum

Amidst the booming market, Massachusetts lawmakers are tackling regulatory gaps concerning THC-infused hemp products, which, despite their illegal status, have been found in various retail outlets—a legislative hearing led by State Sen. Michael Moore spotlighted the issue, with discussions centered on enforcement and regulatory responsibilities.

Introducing these products in the market has prompted a call for legislative measures to close existing loopholes and ensure proper oversight.

Massachusetts Cannabis Scene Still Growing

Adding to the state’s cannabis narrative, the duo Cheech & Chong introduces two ventures that promise responsible access to the Massachusetts cannabis scene. Their non-alcoholic High & Dry™ Hemp THC seltzers, brought in partnership with Atlantic Beverage Distributors, offer a “unique buzz without the hangover,” aligning with the duo’s mission of safe, responsible cannabis consumption.

Brandon Harshbarger, President of Cheech and Chong’s Global Holding Company and upcoming speaker at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference, praised the collaboration with Atlantic Beverage, highlighting their expertise in the adult beverage domain and the successful initial rollout in Boston.

He stated in a press release, “This initial rollout in Boston has been incredible. And that all comes down to the team at Atlantic Beverage. They are the ‘Kings of Craft Beer in Boston’ for a reason. Looking at their history in the adult beverage space, there was no better partner. We’re proud to have them on board the Cheech & Chong team.”

As Massachusetts navigates its growing cannabis market, regulatory challenges, and innovative partnerships, the state remains at the forefront of shaping the future of cannabis consumption and culture.
