Germany’s recent legislative overhaul in the cannabis sector marks a significant turning point not only for the nation but also for the European cannabis landscape

Arthur De Cordova, CEO of Ziel and upcoming speaker at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference, sheds light on the broader implications of Germany’s cannabis reform and its potential impact on the industry.

Germany Leads European Cannabis Reform

Germany’s decision to reclassify cannabis from a narcotic to a regular medicinal product as of April 1 signals a major shift in both public perception and medical accessibility. “The April 22 final passage of Germany’s cannabis law is a bellwether moment for the country and will have a ripple effect across Europe,” De Cordova told Benzinga. This legislative change is anticipated to broaden the base of prescribing doctors, reduce stigma, and simplify distribution channels.

The Ripple Effect Across Europe

With Germany standing as Europe’s largest medical cannabis market, consuming 30 tons in 2023 alone, the anticipated expansion following the new law’s implementation is considerable.

“Germany consumed 30 tons of cannabis in 2023, and with new reforms, the German market is poised to expand in the next 18 months,” De Cordova explained.

This expansion is expected to benefit not only German patients, but also European and international suppliers that meet the stringent production and cultivation standards set by the European Union.

Adapting To New Regulations

Under De Cordova’s leadership, Ziel is adapting its microbial control solutions to align with Germany’s new regulatory framework, particularly the shift towards non-ionizing decontamination methods like Radio Frequency (RF). “Radio Frequency has become the preferred method of microbial control for flower sold in or exported to Germany,” said De Cordova. This move away from ionizing radiation, which faced increasing costs and regulatory hurdles, positions companies like Ziel to better serve the market’s evolving needs.

Germany’s cannabis legislation is more than a national reform; it’s a catalyst for European-wide changes in the cannabis industry. As countries across the continent watch and learn from Germany’s approach, companies like Ziel are at the forefront, ensuring compliance and innovation in this new era of cannabis regulation.
