California‘s cannabis regulator has recalled certain THC oil vape cartridges being sold in106 retail locations across the state, due to containing dangerous levels of a dangerous pesticide, reported Newsweek.

The recall, published by the California’s Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) on Tuesday was prompted by a joint investigation by The Los Angeles Times and cannabis industry newsletter WeedWeek.

The joint effort shed light on the significant health risks of using these products while exposing regulatory shortcomings.

The investigation tested 42 cannabis products out of which 25 contained pesticide concentrations exceeding state and federal safety standards. The chemicals found are proven to cause cancer, liver failure and neurological harm. The harmful substances, many of which are smuggled from China, were not detected in the standard screenings for legal cannabis.

The recalled products are West Coast Cure’s “Orange Cookies” products packaged on or after September 26, 2023, according to the report by the state agency, a part of the California Department of Consumer Affairs.

The recall of a single CUREpen PREMIUM THC OIL Vape Cartridge was issued after determining the presence of a pesticide called chlorfenapyr, an insecticide registered for use on non-food crops in greenhouses by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The company told the Los Angeles Times in a statement that it has "passing test results from state-licensed labs for every product we put on the market."

Meanwhile, the latest recall comes on the heels of DCC's recall of Fog City Farms Shark Bites infused pre-rolls due to the presence of spiromesifen, cadusafos and cyphenothrin pesticides.

As the cannabis industry continues to face these ongoing challenges, the leaders in the space will gather at the 19th Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference in Chicago on Oct. 8-9. This event will bring together executives, investors, and policymakers to discuss solutions for improving product safety and regulatory measures within the cannabis industry.
