Uber Eats Delivers Weed In A Third Canadian Province, General Manager Says This Will 'Improve Road Safety'

Starting this week, residents of Alberta, Canada can have their cannabis products delivered to their homes by Uber Eats, a subsidiary of Uber Technologies, Inc. UBER. To make this happen, Uber once again partnered with marijuana website Leafly LFLY.

"It's awesome news actually, it seems like it has gone a far long way now," one potential recipient told City News.

Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis explained that under the law, store employees must deliver marijuana products, not just regular Uber drivers and customers must prove with proper ID that they are of legal age upon delivery.

"The main thing is making sure that the local cannabis retailer has provincially certified staff who can deliver cannabis safely to someone's house. It's not delivery people that would deliver your food from a restaurant but this will be provincially certified staff," said Keerthana Rang, a spokesperson for UBER Canada.

Improving Road Safety

In 2022, Uber Eats started delivering cannabis in Toronto then expanded to British Columbia in 2023. This makes Alberta the third province in Canada to allow cannabis deliveries through Uber Eats, and many Albertans are surprised by how long it took for this service to become available in their province.

"More Albertans are accessing legal cannabis than ever before. We are partnering with industry leaders like Leafly to help retailers offer safe, convenient options for people in Alberta to purchase legal cannabis for delivery directly to their homes. This will help reduce impaired driving and improve road safety," stated Klaas Knieriem, general manager of grocery and retail for Uber Eats in Canada. "Over the last few years, we have invested heavily in our delivery offering and selection has expanded tremendously. Uber Eats has grown quickly to become a versatile platform usable by diverse businesses large and small."

The first cannabis retailers on the platform in Alberta are Dank Cannabis, Ogden Cannabis, Oil & Grass Cannabis, and Oakridge Cannabis in Calgary and NUMO Cannabis in Edmonton.
