As climate change intensifies, cannabis cultivators face unprecedented challenges, especially in regions with extreme heat. Aerīz, a leader in aeroponically grown cannabis, is tackling these issues head-on. In an interview with Jake Ritter, Arizona sales director, and Kevin Maloney, cultivation manager, we explored how Aerīz overcomes these challenges and advances in sustainable cannabis cultivation.
Tackling Arizona’s Extreme Heat
2023 was reported as the hottest year on record according to NOAA Climate.gov, and 2024 is expected to surpass it with continuous extreme heat days this summer. This environmental challenge is especially acute for cannabis growers in Arizona. Maloney explained the importance of maintaining the right indoor environment to mitigate the effects of external conditions.
“High temperatures and humidity can lead to issues like bud rot and powdery mildew,” he noted. Aerīz's approach includes ensuring equipment efficiency and training employees to detect early signs of environmental stress.
The Aeroponic Advantage
Aerīz employs a unique aeroponic growing method, which sets it apart in the industry. This method involves growing plants without soil, using a misting system to deliver nutrients and oxygen directly to the roots. “Aeroponics ensures a consistent terpene profile and high-quality yield,” Maloney said.
This system also significantly reduces water usage, a crucial benefit in arid climates like Arizona. Ritter emphasized, “Our aeroponic system uses only about 11,333 gallons of water a week for the entire facility, highlighting our commitment to sustainability.”
Addressing Power and Resource Challenges
Maintaining a stable indoor environment is critical, especially when external temperatures soar. Ritter highlighted the importance of quick responses to power outages to prevent disruptions in the growing environment. “We must act swiftly to keep our plants at the right temperature and hydrated,” he said. The aeroponic system's efficiency in water usage also plays a role in managing resources effectively, reducing the environmental footprint of their operations.
Market Trends and Sustainability
The cannabis industry is increasingly focusing on sustainability to meet consumer demand. Ritter pointed out that Aerīz is adopting recycled packaging and ocean-bound PET plastics to reduce environmental impact. “We are at the forefront of sustainability in the cannabis industry,” he stated. This approach addresses consumer concerns and sets a standard for other growers.
Continuous Harvesting and Quality Control
Unlike traditional seasonal harvesting, Aerīz employs a perpetual harvest cycle. This method allows for consistent product availability and adaptability to market demands. Maloney explained, “We are perpetual. All our strains run for about eight weeks, allowing us to plan and adapt efficiently.” This cycle ensures that consumers receive high-quality, consistent products year-round.
Future Initiatives
Aerīz is not resting on its laurels. The company is expanding its operations to California, aiming to establish the largest aeroponic agricultural setup in the world.
They are also committed to reducing their carbon footprint through partnerships focused on reforestation and river restoration. “Our founders are very focused on sustainability and giving back to the environment,” Ritter mentioned.
Aerīz's innovative approaches to cultivation and sustainability make it a standout in the cannabis industry. By addressing the challenges of extreme heat and focusing on environmentally friendly practices, Aerīz sets a high standard for cannabis growers in Arizona and beyond.
