As discussions around cannabis policy reform continue to gain momentum, one critical aspect is often overshadowed —medical marijuana.
With the push for adult-use legalization capturing much of the attention, the role of medical cannabis in policy debates has become less prominent despite its foundational importance.
Luna Stower, chief impact officer at Ispire and upcoming speaker at the upcoming Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference, highlighted the need to prioritize medical marijuana in policy discussions.
The Overlooked Role of Medical Cannabis
Stower pointed out that while recreational cannabis markets may generate significant revenue, medical marijuana continues to play a vital role for many patients.
"Medical cannabis remains the foundation of the movement, providing critical relief to patients who rely on it for conditions like chronic pain, epilepsy, and PTSD," she explained.
She noted that the therapeutic benefits of medical marijuana should not be overlooked in policy debates, especially given the positive impact it has on public health. Despite its crucial role, medical cannabis has not been a priority in recent legislative efforts compared to adult-use markets.
The Push for Global Medical Marijuana Recognition
Stower also addressed the role of medical marijuana in shaping global cannabis regulations.
“Its therapeutic potential still plays a crucial role in shaping global regulations, particularly in countries that are more hesitant about full legalization,” she said.
While many countries remain cautious about adopting adult-use cannabis laws, medical marijuana has opened the door to reform in more conservative markets. Stower believes it is essential to keep advocating for medical cannabis as a distinct issue in policy-making.
The Need for Continued Advocacy
As the industry continues to evolve, Stower emphasized the importance of keeping medical marijuana at the forefront of policy discussions. "We need to continue advocating for medical cannabis as a separate and necessary discussion in policy, as it addresses public health in ways that go far beyond recreational use," she stated.
Stower’s perspectives underscore the need to not only focus on the commercial potential of cannabis but also to ensure that medical marijuana remains a core part of the conversation. These insights will be part of a broader discussion at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference, where industry leaders will explore the future of cannabis policy, investment, and market trends.
