Zinger Key Points
  • “I think both sides are pretending to be on the side of the plant," Josh Kesselman, founder of  RAW Rolling Papers, told Benzinga.
  • Donald Trump unexpectedly expressed support for cannabis legalization, while Kamala Harris' pro-legalization stance is known.
  • On top of millions of dollars he already contributed to various causes, Kesselman recently pledged $25,000 via RAW Giving to Freedom Grow.

"I think both sides are pretending to be on the side of the plant, while they are likely accepting huge donations from mega healthcare, tobacco and liquor companies that financially benefit from cannabis being criminalized," Josh Kesselman, founder of RAW Rolling Papers, told Benzinga Cannabis exclusively. Former President Donald Trump unexpectedly expressed support for cannabis legalization in September, a topic that has been making headlines for weeks, while Kamala Harrispro-legalization stance has been resonating with voters for months.

"Basically, I think both sides will pretend to support our cause but do precious little to truly help," Kesselman continued.

Kesselman ventured into cannabis in 1993. In a June episode of Benzinga’s Cannabis Insider podcast, hosted by Javier Hasse and Elliot Lane, Kesselman talked about the challenges and learning experiences he encountered since joining the industry. He emphasized that genuine growth comes from a deep connection with the product and the community rather than just addressing a market need.

That said, his dedication to social impact with a focus on communities negatively affected by cannabis laws, is unwavering. Kesselman is trying to balance out stalls in cannabis rescheduling with his philanthropic efforts.

RAW Giving Donates To Freedom Grow

On top of millions of dollars he already contributed to various causes, he recently pledged $25,000 via RAW Giving to Freedom Grow, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals incarcerated for cannabis-related offenses.

"The funds will help to expand Freedom Grow's outreach and assist with their continued offering of essential services and support to incarcerated individuals and their families," said Kesselman, who experienced firsthand how badly outdated and strict cannabis laws can hurt people.

"Back in the 1990s, I had my door kicked in by federal agents with a boot on my back and a gun to my head—all for selling bongs," he explained. "They tore my family apart and the repercussions remain with us to this very day."

Education And Advocacy Are The Key To Policy Change

Kesselman highlighted the importance of education and advocacy in a rapidly evolving space.

"I wish consumers would support truly ethical companies that stand with the plant," he said. "The more of us that become successful, the more resources we have to fight for what's right."

To keep voicing concerns and holding lawmakers accountable for better policies is a path to positive change. "It all starts with education and coming together as a community to make positive changes for all," Kesselman said. "Don't stop speaking on the things that matter and putting pressure on lawmakers to do better."

Until change happens, organizations like Freedom Grow, will continue to assist individuals who have been incarcerated for decades and some who are serving life sentences.
