Renergen Launches Liquid Helium Production, Begins Sales To Global Customers

Renergen Limited RGNNF, a South African energy company, announced the full operational status of its liquid helium production train on Thursday.

The facility, which began operations on July 19, marks a significant achievement for Renergen, positioning South Africa among the few countries globally capable of producing liquid helium for the international market.

The company has taken complete operational control of its Phase 1 plant from the original equipment manufacturer, optimizing processes to significantly reduce startup and cooldown timelines. The initial startup process, which previously took over 65 days, has been reduced to just nine days through enhanced operational strategies and expert guidance.

A helium specialist from the United States with extensive experience in cryogenic helium plants has been working with Renergen’s project operations and engineering teams since July 26. This collaboration has resulted in improved plant performance, with plans to extend the specialist’s role to support ongoing operations and future Phase 2 developments, according to the company.

CEO Stefano Marani expressed pride in the team’s achievements, stating, “Despite the challenges encountered in reaching this milestone, we are thrilled to have achieved this significant development and to commence LHe sales to our customers. Our team has unequivocally demonstrated its capability to manage and operate this facility effectively in the face of challenges and under extreme pressure.”

The first batch of liquid helium is set for delivery later this month as the company prepares to fill its customers’ Iso-containers.
