This week marks the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting and Blockchain Hub Davos 2023 which runs concurrently on Jan. 16-19 in Davos, Switzerland.
Describing itself as “The epicenter of blockchain collaboration,” the event puts leaders in Web3 in close proximity to the world economic leaders of the WEF.
It’s been a tough year for blockchain, marked most recently by the FTX FTT/USD collapse, so the summit has a lot to address within the Web3 community and beyond.

The summit thematically divides the focus across three days:
- Day 1 focused on restoring trust in digital assets. Referring to the “myriad challenges over the past year,” the summit addresses responsible regulation and safeguards that digital assets will continue to evolve.
- Day 2 addresses the growing adoption of blockchain technology even during the down market and the maturation of enterprise-class technology to reach broader mainstream audiences.
- Day 3 focuses on an optimistic note as attendees look forward to what they are building “and the major trends they’re watching, from advances in gaming to the evolution of NFTs.”
Benzinga interviewed Davos speaker and Upland co-CEO Dirk Lueth, who is presenting multiple panels including, "A Fireside Chat With Industry Luminaries, Metaverse as a Force for Good" and "The Future of the Metaverse."
Leuth’s goal at Davos is clear: communicate metaverse potential before an assembled audience of world leaders in sustainability and social impact.
“I’m here to advocate for the vision of the open-metaverse and what I see as its two 2023 focus areas: standardization and platformization," Lueth said. "I’m presenting Upland’s vision of the metaverse super-app, where a virtual world grows beyond entertainment to become the platform where people manage their digital lives."
Leuth speaks highly of the WEF-adjacent event as an opportunity to speak to leaders who are setting economic policy and who are outside of the blockchain community.
“At Davos, web3 is not an echo chamber. On the same stage as web3 founders you have leaders like Jean-Noël Barrot, French Minister for Digital Transition, Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Daniel Risch, Prime Minister of Liechtenstein,” Leuth said. “I most look forward to speaking to sustainability and social impact leaders, and to providing them with a new perspective on web3 and how it can be used as a force for good – especially in areas where we have a bad rep as an industry.”
Upland, a metaverse platform geo-mapped to the Earth using open-source technology based on EOS EOS/USD blockchain, wants its so-called "Super-App" to be the evolution of social media as a place to manage your assets and business, as well as a place to interact with brands and build communities.
"The winning metaverse is going to be the platform which figures out the social-media aspect, upland has started empowering our communities with chat, and it's only the beginning." @Davos @DirkLueth
