One of the most famous dogs on the planet is the subject of a new documentary. Here’s what you need to know about "The Doge Documentary," which will center on the life of Kabosu and owner Atsuko Sato.

What Happened: Known around the world as the dog in the doge meme, Kabosu is a Shiba Inu dog adopted by Atsuko Sato in November 2008 from an animal shelter.

“She was a pedigreed dog from a puppy mill and when the puppy mill closed down, she was abandoned along with 19 other Shiba dogs,” Sato previously said.

Kabosu and Sato are featured in the new “The Doge Documentary,” which is the first feature-length film about the famous dog that launched a meme and inspired the creation of cryptocurrency Dogecoin DOGE/USD.

The documentary features interviews with Kabosu, Sato and John Monarch, the creator of the first Doge meme.

“Our goal is to tell the inspirational story of Doge and her incredible impact on the world + her growth over the many evolutions of the internet (from dog to blog to influencer to Reddit to meme to Dogecoin to Own the Doge and beyond,” a Twitter post about the documentary said.

The documentary does not have a release date and appears to be shopping for a streaming partner to pick It up.

“We want the people to know + to understand how a simple photograph of a dog has spread joy and happiness around the world, bringing people together for hijinks again and again.”

The sneak peek of the documentary shows an interview with Sato.

“Atsuko Sato took a photograph of her dog Kabosu and posted it online. Two years later the photo went viral,” the film footage reads.

“I really didn’t think much of the picture. Kabosu must have been born with some kind of mission,” Sato said in the film.

Also featured is footage of Elon Musk on “Saturday Night Live” explaining what Dogecoin is.

The sneak peek ends with the words “an underdog (e) story.”

The film has been funded by Own the Doge and PleasrDao. The filmmakers are welcoming feedback on additional stories and people that should be interviewed and also looking for title ideas for the movie.

“Comment ideas on how to bring the Doge community together & create an incredible film that will forever immortalize the legend of Doge," the filmmakers said.

A meme contest for the “dogeumentary” is also going through April 20.

Why It’s Important: Dogecoin is one of the most popular and valuable cryptocurrencies. The meme cryptocurrency became one of the top trending topics in 2021 and has been supported by the likes of Musk and Mark Cuban.

The Doge NFT is the most expensive meme ever sold and fourth most expensive photo ever sold according to OwntheDoge.

Referred to as the “internet’s Mona Lisa,” the Doge meme has been fractionalized and owned by many people around the world.

Kabosu has over 400,000 followers on Instagram and has captured the hearts of dog fans and cryptocurrency fans worldwide. A health scare in late 2022 brought more attention to the dog that inspired a meme and crypto.

As the story goes, after adopting the dog, Sato took pictures of her 8-year-old Shiba Inu in a random photoshoot. The photos were shared on a blog she started and eventually found their way on Reddit.

Plesardao purchased the meme NFT and is also behind the sale of the couch that was featured in the original meme. Own the Doge recently announced it would be selling tickets to meet Kabosu as its “The Doge Pilgrimage” initiative.
