McDonald's Is Giving Away Free Polygon-Based NFTs But Won't Let You Trade Them

Fast food icon Grimace is set to make its mark in the digital world through a giveaway organized by McDonald’s in Singapore.

What Happened: Starting from August 21, McDonald’s regional branch will offer a total of 2,000 NFT collectibles featuring Grimace each with unique expressions and accessories.

These Polygon MATIC/USD based NFTs will be available for free to claim exclusively through the McDonald’s mobile app in Singapore, reported Decrypt.

To bring this initiative to life, McDonald’s Singapore collaborated with Bandwagon Labs, a crypto infrastructure startup, and enlisted the help of The Hidden Walls, a pseudonymous local NFT artist.

Owners of the Grimace NFTs will be granted special privileges and access to “exclusive treats” in the future, according to McDonald’s.

Why It Matters: Notably, each NFT in this McDonald’s Singapore giveaway will take the form of a “soulbound” token, meaning it cannot be transferred or sold once it has been initially minted.

This design choice ensures that the NFTs will remain unique keepsakes exclusively for McDonald’s customers.

In July, McDonald’s Hong Kong division introduced a playable world within the Ethereum-based metaverse game, The Sandbox, featuring NFT elements. Earlier in 2021, McDonald's launched its first-ever NFT, called McRib sandwich.
