Ethereum ETH/USD co-founder Vitalik Buterin shed light on the misconceived notion of the Metaverse during his appearance at the BUIDL Asia conference in Seoul.
What Happened: He said that the current understanding of the Metaverse, as a vast virtual space with immersive experiences enabled by VR and AR, might not be entirely accurate.
“The Metaverse is poorly defined and often seen more as a brand name than a product,” Buterin was quoted as saying by CoinDesk, addressing the audience.
He described visions of the Metaverse as a universe where accessibility is universal and no single entity has ownership. Buterin noted it is often mistakenly equated solely with virtual reality applications, which simplify user requirements to something as basic as using a laptop but without a physical laptop.

Why It Matters: However, the Ethereum co-founder emphasized that while virtual reality is a significant aspect, it does not encapsulate the entirety of the Metaverse concept. “It’s super useful but not really a-verse,” he added.
Buterin envisions that a truly functional Metaverse should integrate existing virtual elements, including cryptocurrency, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, in an optimal blend.
Earlier in February, Buterin extended an invitation to Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, amidst Musk’s grievances with Microsoft's operating system.
Reacting to Musk’s dissatisfaction shared, Buterin suggested an alternative, stating, “Would be amazing to have you join us and become a desktop Linux enjoyer!”
Price Action: At the time of writing, ETH was trading at $3,568 down 2% in the last 24 hours.
