TotalEnergies SE TTE got sued by five activist groups for a second time for its Uganda and Tanzania projects in a Paris civil court.
The French and Ugandan activist groups accused the French oil major company of environmental hazards from its Tilenga oil development and the $3.5 billion East African Crude Oil Pipeline, reported Reuters.
The activists are using the 2017 French "duty of vigilance" law as a case that requires large companies to identify risks in their global operations and supply chains and detail strategies to prevent them.
"TotalEnergies considers that its vigilance plan is implemented effectively and has ensured that its subsidiaries in Uganda and Tanzania have applied the appropriate action plans so as to respect the rights of local communities and biodiversity," the report quoted TTE's emailed comment.
The first lawsuit failed to get approval for project halt by judicial order under a special fast-track process, with the judge citing that TTE's vigilance plan was legally adequate.
Yesterday, TTE inked a strategic deal with Petronas' clean energy solutions company, Gentari Renewables Sdn Bhd, to develop renewable energy projects in the Asia Pacific.
