UAW Calls For Strike Vote At Detroit Three Automakers: Report

The United Auto Workers union members can reportedly vote until August 24, 2023, to endorse strikes at the Detroit Three automakers in case a new contract deal does not come through. The current contract agreement expires in about 30 days. 

The move comes as the Detroit Three, including General Motors Co GM, Ford Motor Co F, and Stellantis NV STLA, and the union members have made little headway with their negotiations, reported Reuters.

UAW President Shawn Fain persuaded the members to authorize the strike and added that the action would show the automakers that "we're done taking their crap and the scraps they want to feed us."

The UAW has been batting for improved pay and benefits and ending a two-tier pay system contributing to wage erosion.

"Our priorities are clear, the companies can afford them, and there's plenty of time for the Big Three to get serious about these negotiations," Fain said.

In their response, the Detroit Three reportedly have been saying that they want to reach a fair deal that also is helpful to companies in the times of a shift to electric models with fewer parts and require less labor from combustion engines.

U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday called on the automakers and the UAW to reach "a fair agreement" before the contracts expire.
