General Dynamics Corporation GD was awarded a $2.5 billion indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract by the Indian Health Service (IHS) to modernize its electronic health record (EHR) system for 2.6 million American Indians and Alaska Natives.
The 10-year contract, received by unit General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT), has a five-year base period with five option years.
"This new electronic health record system will improve the lives of American Indians and Alaska Natives nationwide by providing essential tools to lower barriers to healthcare," said Kamal Narang, GDIT's vice president and general manager for Federal Health.

Within the Department of Health and Human Services, IHS offers federal health services to 2.6 million American Indians and Alaska Natives from 574 federally recognized tribes across 37 states.
GDIT will substitute the agency's current health record and patient system with Oracle Health's new cloud-based enterprise EHR system through this contract.
The updated EHR system will be situated in a secure Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) high-cloud environment, tailored to adapt to the program's future requirements.
This approach will facilitate enhanced data access and sharing among the widespread IHS and tribal health facilities throughout the country, thereby elevating the patient experience and care quality.
GDIT has been delivering essential IT programs to IHS since 2003.
"We look forward to building on our 20-year partnership with IHS and implementing the agency's IT modernization goals to serve the health needs for current and future generations," Narang added.
