  • The tech titan reported using its prototype satellites to conduct "two-way video calls" and make purchases on Amazon's website.

Amazon.Com, Inc. AMZN said within 30 days of sending two prototype satellites into space, Project Kuiper has achieved a 100% success rate for its Protoflight mission.

According to the tech behemoth, Project Kuiper is on track to begin mass satellite production ahead of a full-scale deployment in the first half of 2024 before entering beta testing with select customers later in the year.

Project Kuiper is Amazon's low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband network.

"We still have a lot of hard work ahead, and scaling for mass production won't be easy," said Rajeev Badyal, vice president of technology for Project Kuiper.

Amazon reported using its prototype satellites to conduct "two-way video calls," as well as stream a high-definition movie on Prime Video.

"When we begin offering commercial service, there will always be a satellite within range of our customers, and our software-defined network will seamlessly hand off the data link from one satellite to the next as they pass overhead so our customers will enjoy uninterrupted connectivity," the company said in a statement.

Project Kuiper aims to position 3,326 satellites in low Earth orbit to provide internet coverage to underserved and remote areas across the globe, Bloomberg reported last month.

The development follows the company's recent launch of Astro for Business, a security solution for small and medium-sized businesses that combines robotics, smart security, and artificial intelligence (AI).
