Amazon's Logistics Workers In Spain Plan Walk-Outs On Cyber Monday: Report

  • There are three working shifts per day at Amazon in Spain.

Amazon.Com, Inc.'s AMZN operations are reportedly set to experience a strike as the CCOO union has called for 20,000 warehouse and delivery workers to halt work for one hour on each shift on November 27, coinciding with 'Cyber Monday,' and the following day.

The action aims to press for better wages and working conditions, per a news report by Reuters.

Cyber Monday, falling on the first working day following Thanksgiving, is a significant date for retailers, marking the time when consumers, back at work, begin purchasing Christmas gifts.

"It is symbolic, but it is a first move and we will consider other kind of actions in the future," the union's secretary general for Amazon, Douglas Harper, told Reuters.

Amazon in Spain operates across three different work shifts daily, according to the report.

CCOO, the prominent union at the American retail giant in Spain, is pressing for enhanced labor safety and recognition of workplace hazards, an increase in HR personnel, and higher wages, citing that the current pay does not match the workload, it added.

Although the date isn't as prominent in European countries, where Thanksgiving is not celebrated, online retailers still provide discounts and special deals akin to those in the United States, Reuters added.

Amazon's logistics workers in Europe and the U.S. have raised concerns about working conditions, leading to growing unionization efforts applying pressure on the company, it said.

This month, a group of workers in Britain staged a walkout, even after a pay increase in October, the report added.

Price Action: AMZN shares are trading lower by 0.16% to $145.90 premarket on the last check Tuesday.
