  • Airbus awarded €2.1B SATCOMBw 3 contract by Germany for next-gen military satellites, critical for European space capabilities.
  • Contract includes development, launch, and 15-year operational support for advanced Airbus-built GEO telecommunications satellites.

Airbus SE EADSY has been awarded the SATCOMBw 3 prime contract by Germany’s armed forces, the Bundeswehr.

The spacecraft are due to be deployed before the end of the decade and the contract value amounts to 2.1 billion euros ($2.27 billion).

“At a time when Western democracies are challenged and where the European institutional space ecosystem is struggling, we are excited and grateful to develop and build this leading-edge system,” said Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space.

The contract covers the next-generation secure military satellite system, including geostationary satellites, ground segments, launch services, and operational support for years.

The contract entails the development, integration, testing, and deployment into orbit of two new military GEO telecommunications satellites manufactured by Airbus. These satellites are designed to succeed COMSATBw 1B and 2B.

Additionally, the contract involves enhancing the current ground segment to support the operations of the new satellites.

Airbus will also provide operational services for 15 years, with the option to extend beyond this period.

The next-generation Airbus satellites, utilizing the Eurostar Neo platform, will weigh approximately 6 metric tons. These satellites are designed to meet the demands of rapid digitalization and the escalating volume of data transfer, incorporating cutting-edge technologies.

A crucial aspect of the contract is the comprehensive German value chain, which includes partners like OHB based in Bremen and several smaller German companies.

Germany will play a central role in key elements such as guiding and integrating advanced payloads, developing solar arrays, and managing overall spacecraft operations.
