The stock market is closed on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025 for a National Day of Mourning to honor former President Jimmy Carter whose state funeral will be held at Washington National Cathedral at 10 a.m. ET. 

The Details: The New York Stock Exchange, owned by Intercontinental Exchange ICE, and the Nasdaq NDAQ have suspended trading in equities and options on Thursday and will resume regular trading hours on Friday. 

Lynn Martin, president of NYSE Group, praised Carter's humble roots and life of public service in a statement announcing the closure of the markets.

“During his noteworthy post-presidential life, President Carter left an enduring legacy of humanitarianism. The NYSE will respectfully honor President Carter’s lifetime of service to our nation by closing our markets on the National Day of Mourning,” Martin said.

Tal Cohen, president of Nasdaq, also released a statement announcing the closure of all Nasdaq markets. 

“President Carter was an exemplary leader, one who tirelessly continued his efforts to improve the human condition even after his tenure in public office was complete. His contributions will be felt by those around the world for years to come. On behalf of Nasdaq, we extend our deepest condolences to the Carter Family,” Cohen said. 

Cohen told NPR the financial industry came together to honor Carter's legacy of service. 

“It was a large undertaking,” Cohen said. “But we thought it was worth the effort.”

Thursday's market closures continue a Wall Street tradition dating back to 1865 of closing markets in order to honor deceased presidents. The most recent closure was in 2018 following the death of former President George H.W. Bush
