Sometimes it seems as though the second we place an order on Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, it arrives at our doorsteps.
What if mental health treatments were similar?
Biotech company Pasithea Therapeutics Corp. KTTA says it has been focused on drug development, trying to solve the world’s biggest clinical problem: brain disorders. Around 1 in 6 people in the last week have suffered from a mental health problem, and Pasithea wants to develop lasting medications for these folks to have a better quality of life.
However, its secondary business Pasithea Clinics focuses on providing intravenous infusions of ketamine for treatment-resistant depression — straight to your door. Think Amazon Prime but for your mental health needs. Ketamine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1970 to be used as an anesthetic, and it works in around 24 hours as a fast-acting antidepressant.
Pasithea states it has partnered with The I.V. Doc™ in the US, a leading partner of mobile clinics, in order to make this distribution a reality and gain exposure throughout the country. Pasithea clinics will start operating their mobile clinics in New York and California, expanding to other major cities in the US in the coming months.
The process to receive at-home treatment includes a video consultation with board-certified psychiatrists, scheduling the dates and times that work for you if you’re approved, and board-certified anesthesiologists arriving at your residence for your treatment. These are the screening, treatment, and follow-up phases.
During treatment, a medical professional will monitor your vital signs and you receive a slow infusion of ketamine for 30 to 60 minutes. Feelings of dissociation, sleepiness, or a dreamlike state may arise but are considered normal. Much like any other medical procedure, it is recommended that you do not drive a car or leave the location for 2 hours after the treatment because of this sedation.
Pasithea says that the 2 psychiatric assessments and up to 6 in-home infusions cost a total of $6,000, and patients should speak to their insurance providers to see what is covered under their own plans. These infusions happen twice a week for up to 3 weeks. It has been noted that ketamine can successfully treat depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
Similar to how Uber Technologies Inc. UBER, Lyft Inc. LYFT, DoorDash Inc. DASH, and Amazon.com Inc.’s AMZN Prime services have transformed our daily lives with automation and access, Pasithea is looking to make mental health treatment the same.
