Elon Musk is reportedly facing internal discussions about the risks of pursuing a higher security clearance for sensitive programs of SpaceX despite being the CEO. Concerns have been raised about potential government inquiries into Musk’s interactions with foreign nationals and past drug use.

What Happened: SpaceX’s legal team advised against Musk seeking a higher security clearance. The team feared that Musk might inadvertently reveal sensitive information during government questioning. This issue emerged as SpaceX’s involvement with national security agencies intensified. Although Musk holds a top-secret clearance, it does not grant access to certain classified programs, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

According to the publication, Musk’s frequent communications with Russian President Vladimir Putin since late 2022 and his public drug use, including marijuana on a 2018 podcast, as factors in the extended review of his security clearance application. SpaceX’s legal team worried that pursuing a higher clearance could lead to Musk being denied or losing his existing clearance.

As President-elect Donald Trump announced Musk to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, there is potential for Musk to gain broader access to classified information. However, Trump has not yet publicly indicated whether he will grant such access. SpaceX is already preparing for the possibility by scouting secure facilities for Musk and his team.

Why It Matters: The potential appointment of Musk to the Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE, has sparked controversy. Robert Reich, a former Clinton-era official, criticized the move, suggesting it could be riddled with conflicts of interest. Reich questioned the intentions behind forming this task force, implying it might not truly focus on efficiency.

Additionally, Musk’s views on drug use have drawn attention. In May, he humorously commented on X about taking cocaine if it boosted productivity, following a lawsuit related to drug use. These factors contribute to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Musk’s security clearance and potential government role.
