CNBC Survey: Trump Is Doing A Good Job...Sort Of

President Donald Trump has strong support among the American people... sort of.

According to CNBC's "All-America Survey," 40 percent of those surveyed expect the U.S. economy to improve next year, a reading that close to a record high. Among those, 67 percent believe the improving economy is attributable to Trump's policies.

Forty-seven percent of Americans believe it's still a good time to invest in stocks, which marks the most bullish sentiment dating back to 2007. Also, 44 percent of people approve of the way the president is managing the economy.

Sounds like great news for the Trump administration, right? Not so fast, at least according to Jay Campbell, the Democratic pollster who took part in the survey.

Campbell highlighted the fact that the CNBC survey found that only 39 percent give Trump an overall approval rating. On the other hand, 48 percent disapprove and 13 percent aren't sure. Just 34 percent of independents approve of Trump while as expected, most Republicans support the president and most Democrats oppose.

"If you look under the hood, things are more precarious," Campbell said. "Nearly all of those superlative numbers are borne aloft by extraordinary Republican optimism. This can give a false sense that everything looks great, when in fact the majority of the public (Democrats and independents) are very leery."

Naturally, Micah Roberts, the Republican pollster on the survey disagrees with his peer.

"It's a positive picture for the administration when focused on the economy," he said. "The survey suggests a new era of optimism."
