Shares of Constellation Brands STZ lost about 4.8% after the company reported its FQ3 earnings at $0.65 per share, up from $0.20 per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding costs from a cider business sale, the company reported earnings at $0.66 per share. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.61 per share. The company's revenue dropped 2% y/y to $966.4 million. STZ projects its full-year earnings of $1.80 to $1.85 per share, versus its earlier projection of $1.63 to $1.78 per share.
Shares of Ross Stores Inc ROST gained about 1.8% after the company reported 4% y/y rise in its same-store sales for the five weeks ended January 1. However, analysts were expecting a 0.5% drop in its same-store sales. ROST's Chief Executive Michael Balmuth said, "For the 13 weeks ending January 29, 2011, we now project earnings per share of $1.32 to $1.34, for a forecasted increase of 14% to 16% compared to $1.16 in last year's fourth quarter."
Airline stocks declined, as Delta Air Lines DAL reported that previous month's storms would lower its Q4 net profit by around $45 million, versus expectations. The NYSE Arca Airline Index (XAL) was down about 0.86%. Some of the other decliners in the list included American parent AMR Corp AMR, JetBlue Airways JBLU and Southwest Airlines LUV.
Shares of Monsanto Co MON gained about 3.2% after the company swung to a Q1 profit. MON reported its earnings at $6 million, or a penny per share, compared with a loss of $19 million, or $0.03 per share, in the year-ago period. The company's earnings from continuing operations came in at $0.02 per share. However, analysts expected earnings of $0.02 per share. The company's revenue surged 8% y/y to $1.83 billion.
