"Pokémon GO" (Nintendo Co., Ltd (ADR) NTDOY-backed and Niantic developed)'s reign as the highest grossing app has officially ended, unofficially marking the peak of its popularity — at least for the time being.

According to Sensor Tower, Pokémon Go held on to the top spot as the highest grossing app on Apple Inc. AAPL's App Store for 74 days. On Tuesday, the augmented reality hit of the summer was dethroned by Supercell's "Clash Royale" following a content update.

A Look Back At Pokémon GO

For instance, Supercell's "Clash of Clans" holds the title for the most consecutive days at number one on the App store at 347. King Digital, now owned by Activision Blizzard, Inc. ATVI's "Candy Crush Saga" ranks second all time at 109 days, followed by Pokémon GO's 74 days.

Pokémon GO still collects more revenue than any other app in eight countries, including Australia, Great Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Thailand. The game also ranks within the top five grossing apps in 38 countries, including the United States.

Finally, Sensor Tower noted that Niantic released new feature updates, including "buddy Pokémon," to bolster user engagement but "has yet to deliver content updates such as new Pokémon that would help to spur increased player spending."
