Amazon To Launch Clothing Line?

Evidence continues to pile in that Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN is looking to expand within the clothing and apparel line.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Amazon is looking to take on L Brands Inc LB by selling competitively priced bras. Specifically, the online retailing giant could sell its own line of women's intimate apparel in the United States. In fact, Amazon already sells bras in Europe for under $10 under the Iris & Lilly brand.

Prior media reports also suggested that Amazon is looking to sell its own line of athleisurewear.

Poaching Talent Across Europe

Drapers, an online fashion and retail news website, reported that Amazon poached senior design and buying experts from some of the U.K.'s largest department and retail stores.

Karen Peacock has joined Amazon as a design director and previously worked as head of design for womenswear and accessories at Marks & Spencer. Amazon also tapped Glen George, the former menswear buying director at Primark, to join Amazon.

Marks & Spencer is the largest retailer in the U.K. by value of sales while Primark is ranked third.

Drapers further suggested that Amazon has been active for quite some time in recruiting top fashion executives.

"They've been recruiting a whole bunch of people for about six months now, all under [vice-president of clothing for Amazon Fashion EU] Frances Russell," a recruitment source told the publication. "You know whatever they do they'll succeed: they have the resources."
