Google Puts Off Reopening Offices As Coronavirus Infections Escalate

Alphabet Inc’s GOOGL GOOG search engine Google is delaying its office reopenings until September as coronavirus cases rise in some states.

What Happened

A memo seen by Bloomberg stated that all of the company’s offices would remain closed until September 7. 

Chris Rackow, Google's vice president of global security, told employees in the memo, “for all of you that are working from home, please continue to do so unless you are told otherwise by your manager.”

Rackow noted the resurgence of COVID-19 in the United States and said that it is "still very much alive in our communities."

Google offices were scheduled to begin reopening July 6.

Why It Matters

Coronavirus cases in 14 U.S. states rose more than twofold in June. The states include California, Florida, and Texas.

Countrywide cases rose 46% and deaths by 12% during June, reported Reuters. 

Many technology and finance companies are letting employees work from home until the pandemic subsides. 

As on Tuesday, at press time, the number of infections in the United States stood at 2,634,432 with 127,410 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. 

Price Action 

Alphabet class A shares traded 0.22% lower at $1,415 on Tuesday in the after-hours session. The shares had closed the regular session 1.49% higher at $1,418.05.

The company’s class C closed 1.34% higher at $1,413.61.
