Donald Trump Has Given Ron Desantis An Official Nickname, And He Probably Won't Like It

Zinger Key Points
  • Trump on Saturday took a dig at Ron DeSantis, who will potentially be a rival if he chooses to run for office in 2024.
  • The two held separate rallies on Sunday, just ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm election.

That Donald Trump and his former protégé Florida Governor Ron DeSantis do not see eye to eye is a known secret, with both parties taking potshots at each other both publicly and privately.

Trump referred to DeSantis as “Ron DeSanctimonious” while addressing a rally in Pennsylvania, where he was campaigning for Republican candidates, including Mehmet Oz on Saturday, media reports said.

While pointing out a poll result that showed Trump leading among other potential Republican presidential nominees, the former president called DeSantis by this new nickname. New York Times White House Correspondent Maggie Haberman said on Twitter that Trump has been testing the name out with people over the last week.

To support her point, she noted that Republican political consultant Roger Stone, who has been consistently attacking DeSantis in public, said on Truth Social a few days ago that it was Trump’s endorsement that made “Ron DeSanctimonious” governor.

DeSantis is rumored to be a potential Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential race, while an Axios report suggested on Friday that Trump would officially announce his bid on Nov. 14.

During Saturday’s rally, Trump suggested he would have announced his candidacy, but held off as he wanted the focus of the night to remain on Oz and Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano.

While announcing his campaign schedule last week, Trump said he would hold a rally in Miami on Sunday along with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL). He left DeSantis out of his campaign plan, despite the latter running for re-election. Political observers called the move an “elbow to Ron’s throat,” as any campaign he would hold on the Sunday before the election day may not get much traction.
