Billionaire entrepreneur and Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk said Monday that his historical party affiliation has been "independent" but recommended to his nearly 115 million Twitter followers that they elect a "Republican Congress."
What Happened: Musk said in a tweet that "shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties."
"Hardcore Democrats or Republicans never vote for the other side, so independent voters are the ones who actually decide who's in charge!"
In separate tweets, Musk said he had a history of voting "entirely Democrat" until this year and that he was "open to the idea" of voting for the party again in the future.
Why It Matters: Musk’s latest tweets come just ahead of midterm polls on Tuesday, which will elect members of Congress. Several states will also have elections for governors and local officials.
In April, Musk said that Twitter must remain "politically neutral" in order to deserve "public trust."
Late last month, Musk completed the takeover of Twitter for $44 billion. In the immediate aftermath, company CEO Parag Agrawal, and other top executives were fired.
Musk said this summer that he prefers Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for the next president of the United States.
More recently, he's called for younger presidents saying, "You don't want to be too far from the average age of the population because it's going to be very difficult to stay in touch."
