Ukraine is anxious that the U.S. midterm elections result may decide the future of its war against Vladimir Putin.
What Happened: Amid mounting fears that a majority for Republicans may weaken American backing for Kyiv, Ukrainian lawmakers have expressed their concerns, Politico reported.
"We hope that for our sake that we don't become a victim to the partisan debate that's unfolding right now in the U.S.," Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, a former Ukrainian deputy prime minister and now opposition lawmaker, said.
"That's the fear, because we are very much seriously dependent on not only American support, but also on the U.S. leadership in terms of keeping up the common effort of other nations," she added.
Republican Kevin McCarthy, a potential next speaker if the party prevails, last month said there would be no "blank check" for Ukraine if the House comes back under his party's control.
The U.S. has offered Kyiv weapons and funding to stand tall against Russia’s invasion. The administration offered $725 million in additional military assistance for the war-torn nation in October, bringing the total to more than $18.3 billion since President Joe Biden took the top office.
Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said the procedure for congressional consideration of Ukraine aid might become more complex if Republicans gain power but was confident that funding will keep flowing.
The White House on Monday said U.S. support for Ukraine’s war effort would be “unwavering” irrespective of the mid-term results. “We are confident the United States’ support will be unflinching and will be unwavering,” Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also urged the U.S. to stay united in its support. Maintain "unwavering unity" and follow Ukraine's example "until peace is restored," he said.
