The Elon Musk Link: SpaceX Reportedly Shells Out Over $250K To Run Starlink Ads On Twitter

As advertisers flee Twitter after Elon Musk’s takeover of the platform, the billionaire has found a way to keep ad dollars pouring in.

What Happened: Tesla Inc. TSLA CEO Elon Musk's SpaceX has sought to use one of Twitter’s larger advertising packages for promoting its Starlink internet service on the platform in Spain and Australia, reported CNBC, citing Twitter’s internal records it viewed.

The ad campaign, which is reportedly called a Twitter “takeover,” will involve spending of over $250,000 in return for positioning a company’s brand on top of the main Twitter timeline for a full day, the report said, citing an unnamed former Twitter employee.

SpaceX purchased the package last week and the campaign will run in the coming days, first in Australia and then in Spain, the CNBC report said. Twitter users in Australia and Spain will see Starlink's brand messaging the first three times they open the Twitter app on the day(s) the campaign is run, it added.

The report also noted that SpaceX hasn’t previously purchased large advertising packages from Twitter.

Why It’s Important: The report comes amid companies pausing ads on Twitter, as they are apprehensive about the direction the platform will take under its new owner. Musk, on his part, did not do himself a favor when he met with advertisers last week.

Advertisers came away concerned, with the meeting only serving to highlight flaws in Musk’s leadership, Business Insider said, citing social media experts.

Tesla bull Gary Black recently tweeted that he expects Twitter’s ad revenues to decline to $1 billion from an estimated $4.4 billion for

Musk using SpaceX may also be construed as a step to show that Twitter is a good place to place their ads on.
