Apple AirPods Pro As Hearing Aids? It May Be Closer Than You Think

Apple Inc.'s AAPL AirPods Pro model may not be far off from working as a device that assists people with mild-to-moderate hearing loss.

What Happened: A study published in iScience journal from Cell Press stated that AirPods Pro met four of five standards of personal sound amplification products.

The researchers studied the electroacoustic features of hearing aids and selected smartphone-bundled earphones, specifically AirPods, as PSAPs. On comparing the performances among adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss, they found that AirPods Pro may have the potential to be a hearing assistive device.

More research is, however, still required to investigate the safety and feasibility of using earphones bundled with other smartphones as PSAPs.

Apple did not immediately respond to Benzinga's request for comments.

Why It's Important: Apple has been working on pairing hearing aids with iPhones. The Cupertino-based tech giant has also introduced an array of features and controls in its MFi program, reported ARS Technica.

The Tim Cook-led company also pushed the hearing assistance feature of its audio hardware with Live Listen and Conversation boost, which improves mic pickup from people in front of the user.

In 2021, it was reported that Apple is trying to evolve AirPods into a health device, including enhancing hearing, reading body temperature, and monitoring posture.
