Xi Jinping Has 'Capability To Influence' Kim Jong Un Over Halting Nuclear Tests: South Korea President

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol urged his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to help “influence” Kim Jong Un from conducting his seventh nuclear test and warned North Korea of an unprecedented joint response if it pursues banned development of nuclear weapons and missiles.

What Happened: “What is sure is that China has the capability to influence North Korea, and China has the responsibility to engage in the process,” Yoon Suk Yeol said in an interview with Reuters.

“It would be extremely unwise for North Korea to conduct a seventh nuclear test,” Yoon added.

This came after U.S. President Joe Biden told Xi during one of their meetings at the G20 that Beijing is obliged to attempt to talk Pyongyang out of conducting its seventh nuclear test.

International sanctions from the U.S. and the U.N. have failed to halt Kim’s growing weapons programs. Seoul and Washington have repeatedly warned that Kim's isolated nation has finished all technical preparations for a new test, which could take place soon.

Meanwhile, Yoon warned that if Kim continues to pursue missile tests and nuclear weapons programs, the response of the Asian nation with its allies, Japan and the U.S., “will be something that has not been seen before.” However, he declined to elaborate on what that would be.

“We must respond consistently, and in lockstep with each other,” Yoon said.
