What Happened: Apple announced the winners of the 2022 App Store Awards, highlighting the games and applications that encouraged people to “engage more deeply with the world, expand their imaginations, and stay connected to friends and loved ones.”
A social media app, which is dubbed a threat to Meta Platforms Inc.'s META Instagram and ByteDance-owned TikTok, has won the “iPhone App of the Year” award. The app, BeReal, encourages users to take a photo every day in an effort to create a daily habit.

Additionally, Apple selected five Cultural Impact winners. These are: How We Feel, Dot’s Home, Locket Widget, Waterllama, and Inua - A Story in Ice and Time.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “From self-taught solo creators to international teams spanning the globe, these entrepreneurs are making a meaningful impact and represent the ways in which apps and games influence our communities and lives."
