Marvin Hier, the founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Rabbi that prayed at Donald Trump’s inauguration as president, has reportedly called for the former U.S. leader to denounce Kanye West and Nick Fuentes.
What Happened: Hier wrote a guest column for the Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday. He said, “I was shocked to the core to learn that former President Trump hosted two anti-Semites, Kanye West and Nick Fuentes, at his Mar-a-Lago resort last week.”
“I couldn’t help but wonder, what would other former presidents like Washington and Lincoln and Truman and Reagan, or civil rights leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Bayard Rustin, say about such a meeting?”
Why It Matters: Hier said that even if Trump hadn’t heard of Fuentes before “surely he knew all about West” who the Rabbi said had “rallied against and threatened Jews” on social media, according to Hollywood Reporter.
He said that the Jewish faith doesn’t believe anyone is perfect and urged Trump to “clearly and unequivocally denounce the two bigots you hosted and everything they stand for.”
Trump hosted Fuentes, a white nationalist and antisemite, at his Mar-a-Lago resort for dinner last week. Fuentes came as a guest of rapper Kanye West, also known as Ye, who has previously made antisemitic comments as well.
The former president said Ye was a “seriously troubled man” and said he didn’t know Fuentes.
