Twitter Rolls Out Feature To Let Users Add 'Confirmed Phone Number' Tags: Will It Help Elon Musk Eradicate Bots?

Twitter has introduced a new feature, allowing users in India to mark their accounts as having a confirmed phone number. But will this feature be able to differentiate between authentic users and bots?

What Happened: Once users activate this setting, a "confirmed phone number mark" will be displayed on their profiles. This mark will only be visible to users in India who are logged in. Activating the mark will also let other users know that the account belongs to someone in India.

It isn't the same as a verified blue check mark, but it does hint that a user is authentic with a phone number.

Here's how users can activate the new mark:

Sign in to twitter.com or open the Twitter app (iOS or Android).

Go to your profile.

Click or tap the Edit profile button.

Scroll down and tap on the "confirmed phone number mark."

Slide the icon beside the "display confirmed phone number mark" option, and it will show to others in the same region.

Why It's Important: Before Elon Musk took over Twitter, he promised that if the bid he led succeeded, "we will defeat the spam bots or die trying!"

In May, Musk also said bot representation is not accurate in Twitter's public filings.

Last year, Twitter rolled out a feature that allowed accounts on the platform to be identified as the "good bots."
