Donald Trump’s tax returns have been handed over to a committee of the U.S. House of Representatives.
What Happened: The Ways and Means Committee got access to the tax returns after a protracted legal fight in which the former president accused the Democrat-led panel of being driven by political motivations, reported Reuters.
“Treasury has complied with last week's court decision,” said a spokesperson for the Treasury Department.
Why It Matters: Last week, Trump received a legal setback after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the release of the tax filings to the committee.
The panel wanted the tax returns to audit how the Internal Revenue Service audits presidential tax returns.
However, the committee will have little time to complete its probe since Republicans are set to take over the House majority in January, noted Reuters.
Trump was the first president in 40 years that didn’t release his tax returns. The former U.S. leader said he will be running for president again in 2024.
