Donald Trump called Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell an “Old Crow” for allowing the passage of the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill last week even though the Republicans are set to take control of the House in early January.
What Happened: Trump said on Truth Social, “If the Old Crow waited just 10 days, the Republican Majority in the House could have made the ‘Ominous’ Bill MUCH, MUCH, MUCH BETTER.”
Trump said that allowing the passage of the bill was just “another win for Democrats” and it would not have happened if he were still the president.
In another post, Trump said that the Democrats “must have something really big on” McConnell “in order to get him and some of his friendly ‘Republican’ Senators to pass the horrendous ‘All Democrat, All the Way’ OMINOUS Bill.”
Why It Matters: In total, 18 Senate Republicans, including McConnell, voted with the Democrats to pass the Omnibus bill, reported MSNBC.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) asked the Senate Republicans to kill the bill. He reportedly threatened GOP senators that supported the bill that he would reject their proposals in the upcoming Congress unless they voted against the bill, according to the report.
McCarthy is vying to become the next House speaker and is currently the minority leader of that chamber.
Other prominent Republicans that have criticized McConnell include Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) who called the Omnibus the “ugliest spending bill on record” in a radio show, reported The Hill.
“Our party leadership turned on Republican voters, turned on the Republican base, turned on most Republican senators,” said Lee.
