Uber, Amazon And Other Gig Employers Face Flak For Inadequate Work Infrastructure For Employees In India

  • Research firm Fairwork India slammed OlaUber Technologies, Inc UBERDunzoPharmEasy, and Amazon.Com, Inc AMZN Amazon Flex in Fairwork's fourth annual study of the work conditions of platform workers on digital labor platforms in India.
  • Fairwork India said the firms faired poorly in assessing the creation of fair conditions for their gig workers, TechCrunch reports.
  • The research project, which teamed with partners at the University of Oxford, said the firms above did not provide fair pay, fair contracts, fair management, fair representation, or fair working conditions to their gig workers.

  • The firm studied 12 firms and granted unicorn Urban Company a score of seven out of 10, six to online grocer BigBasket, five each to Flipkart and Swiggy, four to Zomato, two to grocery delivery firm Zepto and one to Tiger Global-backed delivery firm Porter.
  • In 2022, only Bigbasket, Flipkart, and Urban Company won the first point because of their public commitments to pay workers at least the hourly local minimum wage after factoring in work-related costs, Fairwork India said.
  • Bigbasket and Urban Company agreed to reimburse the difference between workers' earnings per hour and the hourly local minimum wage after costs.
