A hard, unripe and bitter avocado can spoil your mood — and there's no way to determine the ripeness of an avocado by looking at its outer color or texture. But fret not! Finally, there's a scanner that can detect ripeness in avocados.
What Happened: During the Consumer Electronics Show, or CES 2023, a Dutch food tech startup grabbed many eyeballs for its simple solution to tackle the food waste problem, reported The Washington Post.

The startup, One Third — which named itself ‘One Third' after the fact that one-third of all food produced worldwide is wasted — unveiled its Avocado Ripeness Check during the event.
The device harnesses the power of optical sensing and artificial intelligence, or AI, to determine whether an avocado is ripe or firm. It is built to be used in supermarkets.
One Third is currently testing the Avocado Ripeness Check at a Canadian supermarket. It has already started working with growers, distributors and supply chain partners to predict the shelf life of avocados, tomatoes, strawberries and blueberries, the report noted.
Apart from the aforementioned technology, One Third has Handheld Scanners — the device leverages AI to predict the shelf life of fruits and vegetables with around 24 hours of accuracy, Visual Quality Inspection and Data Sharing Platform.
