Elon Musk Hopes People Who Left Twitter For Other Platforms Stay There

Twitter CEO Elon Musk commented on those who have left Twitter in favor of other platforms such as Mastodon and LinkedIn, saying that he hoped they stay there.

What Happened: Musk made his remarks on a Twitter thread started by software engineer Tracy Chou who is also the founder and CEO of Block Party.

Chou said, “[Not gonna lie] ngl [I] am very resentful that [i] have to spend time on mastodon and [LinkedIn] now that so many tech people are migrating off twitter.”

In response, Dogecoin DOGE/USD co-creator Billy Markus said, “The people who migrated to those platforms are unlikely to say anything worth hearing anyway.”

Musk weighed in by saying, “hoping they stay there.”

Why It Matters: After Musk took over Twitter in late October, noted economist Paul Krugman opened an account on Mastodon.

The Nobel laureate said at the time, “As Musk's apparently uncontrollable nastiness and childishness drives away users and advertisers, it's easy to see how Twitter's usefulness could collapse.”

It was reported this month that the exodus from Twitter is more likely to benefit Reddit and LinkedIn as Mastodon is complicated for mainstream users to use.

Notably, in December Musk-run Twitter placed a ban on links to other social media platforms and suspended accounts that tried to direct users to rivals. This policy was later reversed.
