What Happened: Speaking with Scott during a Behind The Tech session, Gates said, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is so capable that it could write a “college application or re-write the declaration of independence the way a famous person like Donald Trump might.”

Gates was speaking about his experience with GPT-4 as he was the first person outside OpenAI to see this technology. Gates hosted a dinner last August with OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, Co-Founder Greg Brockman and others, according to Scott.

When asked about the OpenAI GPT technology’s abilities and limitations, Gates said it doesn’t understand context like humans.

He also said, “Math is a very abstract type of reasoning,” and is currently ChatGPT’s greatest weakness. OpenAI’s technology can “weirdly” solve lots of math problems, especially if they are in abstract form, but in answering numerical questions, it still makes mistakes “confidently.”

Regarding people’s concerns that AI might eliminate the need for a human workforce, Gates stated, “Microsoft talks about making humans more productive. So, some things will be automated, but many things will just be facilitated where the final engagement is very much human, but a human who’s able to get a lot more done than ever before.”

This isn’t the first time Gates has spoken publicly about the revolutionary potential of AI and acknowledged its ability to make factual mistakes. Earlier, he said ChatGPT is as big an invention as the internet
