France's Macron Berated By China Hawks For 'Ill-Judged' Taiwan Remarks: 'Undermines Decades-Long Commitment...'

A cross-party alliance of parliamentarians from democratic countries slammed French President Emmanuel Macron for his "ill-judged remarks" on Taiwan after he recently met Xi Jinping.

What Happened: The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, in a statement, dubbed Macron's comments on Taiwan in his recent interview as poorly thought out, reported Politico.

It "not only disregards the vital place of Taiwan in the global economy but undermines decades-long commitment of the international community to maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait," IPAC said.

The statement, which 15 M.P.s from national legislatures in the E.U. signed — including one from Macron's own party, as well as three M.E.P.s and 13 U.K. parliamentarians — read that "it should be emphasized that the president's words are severely out of step with the feeling across Europe's legislatures and beyond."

The statement pointed out that the French leader's comments were wrongly timed amid the Chinese military's ongoing war maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait.

The backlash came after Macron last week said that Europe should not get dragged into a Joe Biden-Xi confrontation over Taiwan. According to Macron, "the great risk" Europe faces is that it "gets caught up in crises that are not ours, which prevents it from building its strategic autonomy."
