GM Switches Lane To Align In-Screen Strategy With Tesla, To Phase Out Apple CarPlay From EVs

  • General Motors Co GM is ditching Apple Inc's AAPL CarPlay on many of its new electric models along with a similar one made by Alphabet Inc's GOOG GOOGL Google for Android phones.
  • CarPlay app, which allows drivers to use their iPhones through the car's display, has become a mission-critical feature for some buyers, the Wall Street Journal reports.
  • GM's strategy aligns with those of Tesla Inc TSLA and other EV makers, which is a fight with billions of dollars in future revenue at stake.
  • GM is using Google's underlying technology for its new interface, so Android users will still see Google Maps and many familiar features, except Android Auto.
  • After years of trying to mimic the look and feel of consumer electronics in the car, automakers flocked to the more simplified offerings of the tech giants, leaving car executives worried they have lost a critical touch point with their customers.
  • GM finance chief Paul Jacobson said the new GM-specific software would offer a more personalized experience for its drivers. GM would customize the touch-screen interface with GM's own branded look and features.
  • The software will be able to collect data on the vehicle's electric charge and tire pressure and make suggestions, including adding a suggested route to Google Maps for drivers who want to use the hands-free Super Cruise assisted driving system. GM said CarPlay and Android Auto could not offer such services.
  • GM looks to launch its new display-screen software on the Chevrolet Blazer electric SUV, set to go on sale this summer. The automaker will continue offering CarPlay and Android Auto on its gas- and diesel-engine vehicles and a few EVs.
  • Reportedly, the plan to reach more deeply into the vehicle's controls was a factor in GM's decision to ditch CarPlay on future models.
  • Price Action: GM shares traded higher by 0.32% at $34.60 premarket on the last check Monday.
