Elon Musk Says AI Has The 'Potential Of Civilization Destruction'

Tesla Inc. TSLA CEO Elon Musk is reportedly embarking on a mission to launch an OpenAI rival, but says artificial intelligence or AI has the “potential of civilization destruction.”

What Happened: In an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, billionaire tech tycoon Musk said that AI is far more dangerous than any flawed vehicle.

“AI is more dangerous than, say, mismanaged aircraft design or production maintenance or bad car production,” he can be seen saying in a preview of the interview. “In the sense that it has the potential, however, small one may regard that probability, but it is non-trivial. It has the potential of civilization destruction.”

In the wake of his latest comments about AI developments, another one of Musk’s interviews from 2018 has started doing rounds on social media.

The 2018 interview shows Musk answering the questions of popular podcast host Joe Rogan and explaining how he tried to convince people to slow down or regulate AI.

On Sunday, Musk also said that during his only one-on-one meeting with former U.S. President Barack Obama, he didn’t talk about Tesla or SpaceX but AI regulation.

Why It’s Important: Musk isn’t the only person concerned about AI developments. Last month, Musk was among the 1000+ signatories, including Apple Inc. AAPL co-founder Steve Wozniak calling for a pause on training systems exceeding OpenAI’s GPT-4

Renowned business magnate and investor Warren Buffett also expressed his doubts about OpenAI’s chatGPT and compared it with the invention of the Atom Bomb, saying that the possibility of the technology scares him
