AI Chatbot Crackdown: Microsoft & Co. Face Regulatory Heat In Europe as ChatGPT Reignites Debate

  • The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) joined the trumpeting against ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence chatbots, calling on EU consumer protection agencies to investigate the potential harm to individuals.
  • The growing popularity of Microsoft Corp-backed MSFT Open AI's ChatGPT has spurred others like Alphabet Inc's GOOG GOOGL GoogleAmazon.Com Inc's AMZN cloud division AWS and Meta Platforms Inc META to launch similar tools, Reuters reports.
  • BEUC, the umbrella group for 46 consumer organizations from 32 countries, listed its worries in separate letters earlier in April to the network of consumer safety authorities (CSN network) and consumer protection authorities (CPC network).
  • The lobby group said chatbot content is often factually incorrect and can mislead consumers leading to deceptive advertising. It said younger consumers and children were more vulnerable to such risks.
  • The group also called on the Consumer Safety Network to start an exchange of information and an investigation into the safety risks of these products.
  • Price Action: MSFT shares traded lower by 1.50% at $281.46 on the last check Monday.
