Nio To Offer Free Battery Swaps Along Highways For A Week: Report

Nio Inc – ADR NIO car owners in China will reportedly have free access to battery swap stations along the highways for a week starting April 28.

What Happened: Nio car owners can access battery swap stations along the highways in China free of cost from April 28 until May 4 in light of Labor Day holidays in China, reported CnEVPost. The Labor Day holiday in China is from April 29 to May 3.

Nio is offering these benefits for the second time this year. Earlier in 2023, Nio offered free access to battery swap stations from Jan. 13 to Feb. 5 in time for the Chinese New Year holiday, CnEVPost said.

The free service put no cost pressure on Nio as the revenue generated in the meantime covered costs despite the stations reaching an all-time high of 62,356 services in a single day on Jan. 27, the report added.

Four to six free battery swaps per month are already available to most current NIO owners with a few early adopters having unlimited access to the service, said the CnEVpost.

Why It Matters: Earlier this week, it was reported that Nio added 21 battery swap stations on the 1,260-mile-long G3 Beijing-Taipei highway which aims to connect Mainland China with Taiwan. With the addition of the G3 highway, Nio's battery swap station network covers nine highways and eight urban clusters.

The Chinese EV maker also upgraded its guidance in February and said that it expects to add 1,000 battery swap stations in 2023. If achieved, Nio would have 2,300 battery-swap stations by year end.
