Senator Bernie Sanders on Thursday said he didn't have "many alternatives" other than forgoing his bid to run in the 2024 presidential elections and backing President Joe Biden's re-election.
What Happened: Sanders, who endorsed Biden's re-election bid for the White House, in an interview with MSNBC, said, "I don't think one has many alternatives."
"What's at stake is the future of American democracy."

"What's at stake is whether we have some right-wing demagogue running this country or a pathological liar or somebody who's trying to divide us up," he said, adding, "Or whether we reelect somebody who is a very decent human being who's trying to do the opposite, trying to bring the American people together."
Sanders on Tuesday announced that he would not run for the presidency in 2024, shortly after President Biden announced his candidacy for re-election. Sanders said he is backing Biden because "the last thing this country needs is a Donald Trump."

He acknowledged that "It is a surprise to nobody when I say that I disagree with Biden on many issues, but on the other hand, I think he deserves credit for what he has accomplished."
Why It Matters: Earlier this week, Biden announced his plans to run for re-election, despite recent polls indicating that supporters from both political parties did not favor him running again. Nearly half of those surveyed by NBC News attributed Biden's age as the reason why he should not run again.
A new poll on Friday showed that Biden‘s approval rating has hit an all-time low. As per the latest survey, the average approval rating of Biden over the ninth quarter of his presidency, which is 39.7%, has fallen below that of Trump, which was 41.6%, during the same period.
