The United Auto Workers laborers’ union is reportedly holding back from endorsing Biden for a second term following disagreements on his EV policies.
What Happened: UAW President Shawn Fain said that the government is allotting funds in billions to enable the transition to EVs without any commitment to workers, reported Politico citing a union memo.
“The EV transition is at serious risk of becoming a race to the bottom. We want to see national leadership have our back on this before we make any commitments,” Fain said as per the report.
Fain has called for better compensation to workers in terms of wages and benefits and standards for both the union’s present and future members. The union currently has 400,000 active members and more than 580,000 retired members in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
The laborers’ union, however, will not back the Republican nomination and former President Donald Trump. “Another Donald Trump presidency would be a disaster,” the memo said. UAW has always been leaning toward the Democrats.
Why It Matters: Last month, the Biden administration built on its existing vision for clean- transportation with new proposed federal vehicle emissions standards aimed at making EVs account for over two-thirds of all light-duty vehicle sales by 2032.
EVs accounted for merely 5.8% of new vehicle sales in the U.S. in 2022.
